FA Euro New York’s 2010 MLS NEXT Homegrown team earned a hard-fought 1–0 victory away to CF Montréal, with Zachary Thompson’s goal settling a demanding contest played in cold and windy conditions.

It was a win built on preparation, defensive organization and the willingness to adapt. FA Euro was not always at its most fluent in possession, but the team carried out a clear plan without the ball and protected its advantage through the final whistle.

Expecting Montréal to commit numbers forward in the buildup, FA Euro sat a little deeper than usual. The aim was to control the spaces in midfield, encourage the hosts into areas where possession could be challenged, and attack after winning the ball back.

That approach produced several promising regains. Eventually, one of those midfield turnovers led to the decisive moment, with Thompson providing the finish to put FA Euro ahead.

The opening half still brought challenges. FA Euro was less secure on the ball than usual and struggled to establish a consistent passing rhythm. Yet its control of space remained strong. By staying organized and limiting the openings available to Montréal, the team restricted the hosts to half chances.

The second half followed a similar pattern. FA Euro gained more of a foothold in possession, although sustained spells on the ball remained difficult to build. With passing sequences often breaking down after five or six passes, the team continued to rely on its positioning and collective effort to keep the match under control.

Those qualities proved decisive. FA Euro defended with discipline and fought through the closing stages, preventing Montréal from producing a meaningful effort on target. Thompson’s goal was enough to secure the away victory and a clean sheet.

For the 2010s, the performance offered both a result to celebrate and clear areas to improve. Greater security in possession remains a focus, but the ability to execute a game plan and stay organized in difficult conditions gave the group a valuable win in Montréal.
