The second meeting against Charlie Ledula and the Long Island Rough Riders (6-1-1) was yet another nail-biter and chippy contest, as the PDL first team drops their seventh game to their long rival in Uniondale.
The beginning of the game was clearly all FA Euro, as within the first few minutes of the game. Adam Marcu gained possession on a pass from defender Sunatillo Khusanov, but winger Sergei Bulatov was not quick enough on the right side for the pass. A. Marcu was eventually offsides on the play.
The PDL first team maintained possession of the ball throughout the first 15 minutes of play. Matt Dabrowski, who started his second consecutive game had 11 saves in this contest.
The remainder of the half was controlled by the Rough Riders, but staying on their toes, was the defense of FA Euro. Khusanov, Mauritzon, and Folla were the three defenders back as nothing could be formed up front.
Turnover from Sunatillo Khusanov gave the Rough Riders a magnificent chance, but the Loyola-Maryland goalkeeper saw the play forming the entire time. Big save.
In the 33' minute, the second turnover in as many minutes, this time by team captain Johan Mauritzon caused by his former teammate Charlie Ledula led to the game-winning and teams lone goal of the contest as the LIU Post senior netted his third goal in conference play this season from just outside the box, and over the head of former teammate Matt Dabrowski.
The second half began just as it finished, with the momentum on Long Island's side. The two strikers Ledula and Vazquenza all alone just outside the box, as a header could not go, but again into the hands of the first team goalkeeper.
Enter Robi Sillah. A five game suspension for the Gambian native did not hold back Sillah, as he entered in the 53' minute of play. A man on a mission to regain his form after being out since May 15th, began play with a booming pass to Dominque Marvens, who was onside, just a bit too far as the 6'6" Haitian could not get the kick away, as that would most likely have been a goal if the pass came a second earlier.
Sillah, who has been on the squad since the 2017 season, tore his MCL during the middle of the campaign, and was dearly missed in the latter stretch.
During the final moments of the game, things began to get chippy, as multiple yellow cards were issued, including a red card on the bench of FA Euro. Assistant Coach Marco Balsamo was ejected due to a disagreement with the fourth official. Balsamo will be suspended one game, that will result him missing the Evergreen contest on Friday.
The first team stayed in fifth place at 1-7-0 with three points on the season. Their next chance to gain precious points will be on Friday in Brooklyn, as they welcome in the Evergreen Hammers to Aviator Sports and Events Center at 8:00pm. The game will be LIVE on the I-95 Sports and Entertainment Network, with Eric Cordova and Ben Marcu on the call.
